The restaurant, as it turns out, is a tribute to Chetak, the legendary horse of Maharana Pratap. Every corner of this space quietly honours that legacy, a tale of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice woven into Udaipur’s history.

During the Battle of Haldighati, Chetak carried Maharana Pratap into fierce combat and, despite being gravely injured, led him to safety before collapsing.

The restaurant’s tagline — “The Horse Whose Devotion Defied Death”, isn’t just poetic marketing.

It’s a reminder of that unwavering spirit.

There’s something powerful about dining in a place built on such emotion. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a quiet salute to loyalty and bravery, values that still define Rajasthan’s soul.

Our evening at Tribute unfolded slowly, the way all good dinners should. The menu arrived, a careful mix of Rajasthani classics and global dishes, but our focus was clear. We wanted a flavour that felt rooted in Udaipur.

We began with chicken seekh kebabs, juicy, tender and smoky, followed by their famous Laal Maas — a fiery red mutton curry served with plain naans. The aroma alone announced its arrival. The spice hit deep, not sharp, and carried that slow, lingering warmth that makes you reach for another bite even when you’re full. The papads came in complimentary and added to the overall dining experience.

While our focus stayed on the signature Laal Maas, the menu also tempts with regional delights like Palak Cheese Balls, Kadhai Paneer, and Gatta Curry, each echoing Rajasthan’s bold culinary spirit. International visitors can lean toward familiar comfort with Chicken Stroganoff or explore the aromatic range of biryanis on offer.

Service here deserves its own praise. The staff moved with quiet confidence, polite, attentive, never hovering. Having worked in hospitality industry myself, I notice those little things. Tribute’s team gets it right.

Reaching Upre by 1559 AD is part of the charm. Hidden along a quiet lane near Ambrai Ghat, the journey takes you through Udaipur’s old-world heart, a narrow street where scooters hum past painted doorways and various small handicraft shops.

We would not recommend visiting this restaurant in your fancy vehicle, instead take the Chandpole walking bridge and take the Ambrai Road and at one point you will find Hotel Lake Pichola and Upre.

Then, you step onto the terrace, and the view opens up the panoramic views of Lake Pichola. The City Palace standing tall across the water, the hum of evening chatter fades and Gangaur Ghat comes alive with street lights all around it. 

The View: When the City Palace Turns to Gold

There are rooftop restaurants, and then there’s Upre by 1559 AD, a space that feels designed for slow evenings and unhurried conversations. From its terrace perch above Lake Pichola, Upre opens to a postcard view of City Palace glowing in the sunset’s reflection, its ivory façade turning gold as the sun slips behind the Aravallis.

As twilight settles, the lights flicker across the lake, the faint sound of temple bells drifts in, and the air hums with quiet conversations and clinking glasses. The restaurant’s soft lighting, stone flooring, and breezy layout give it a timeless charm, luxurious yet intimate.

You’ll find everything from Laal Maas and Mutton Dhungar to delicate soups, pastas, and grilled options, all served with the understated grace the brand is known for.

Since we’d already relished Laal Maas during our dinner experience at Tribute a few nights earlier, we opted for something different this time.

We decided to go for sweet corn chicken soup, followed by Mutton Dhungar with naan and rotis. Dhungar Maas is a variation of Laal Maas prepared with a smoky technique. The meat arrived tender, lightly smoked, and rich with earthy flavours, balanced perfectly with fresh bread. 

Dessert was a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, a simple, nostalgic, and a perfect way to close the evening.

While we personally found the flavours at 1559 AD slightly more refined, Upre’s strength lies in the full package, a good meal paired with a great view and genuinely warm service. 

The staff moves quietly between tables, often pausing to check on guests without ever intruding. So, we had no issues with the service.

Vegetarians will find plenty to choose from here, and those seeking a fine-dine experience without the stiffness of luxury hotels will appreciate Upre’s relaxed yet polished approach.

Insider Details: Reservations & Best Tables

The best time to visit Upre by 1559 AD is just before sunset. As the golden light washes over City Palace and the reflections ripple across Lake Pichola, the view turns cinematic — it’s that perfect “pause and stare” moment Udaipur is famous for.

That said, book your table in advance, especially if you’re visiting between October and February. Sunset slots fill up quickly, and walk-ins often end up waiting or missing the best lake-facing seats.

If you’re arriving by car or Uber, note that the approach road near Chand Pole Bridge can be confusing and narrow. Most drivers will drop you close to Ambrai Ghat, from where a short walk leads to Lake Pichola Hotel, home to Upre’s rooftop terrace.

But when it comes to flavour and finesse, 1559 AD and Tribute both deliver highly on flavour and impeccable service. Upre, on the other hand, feels more about the experience than the plate — ideal for those seeking romance and atmosphere, less so for purist food enthusiasts.

They also serve Mexican dishes and sizzlers that you may want to try. However, we prefer their Indian food items.

Getting to 1559 AD

Finding 1559 AD is part of the experience and surprisingly easy. This restaurant, bistro lounge sits right on Fateh Sagar Road, so you won’t need to do much searching.

The restaurant is best accessed by car or cab, making it convenient even if you’re not familiar with Udaipur’s roads. As soon as you enter through the main entry, you’re greeted by the peaceful ambience of the open courtyard and tastefully restored interiors.

Heritage walls, soft lighting, and shaded seating create a space that feels a world away from the bustling streets outside. Unlike its sister restaurant, Upre by 1559 AD, this one doesn’t offer panoramic lake views. Instead, the focus is on heritage-style dining.

The Ambience and Décor

As you walk through the courtyard, you encounter a heritage bungalow transformed into a highly rated restaurant. The century-old property retains most of its architectural design and is fused with the concept of art nouvelle. 

Outdoors, tables are evenly spaced for those who want to enjoy garden dining. We, however, chose to move indoors for our meal. Along the way, we noticed some tables in the corridor area as well.

The lounge area is equally inviting. You could easily spend more time here than at a Starbucks if you want to linger over food and conversation. In the evenings, live music adds a charming backdrop to the experience.

The main dining area boasts simple yet elegant decor, warm and welcoming. It exudes old-world hospitality while delivering classy service and a refined dining experience. This makes 1559 AD a great choice for couples and families seeking quality meal time together.

Food and Menu Experience

Between the two sister restaurants, we chose to try 1559 AD Udaipur first. Like Upre, it blends Rajasthani classics with continental favourites, making the menu both approachable and indulgent. 

The variety allows you to explore a range of vegetarian and meat dishes, all served with the style and grace the restaurant is known for. The menu is quite identical to Upre by 1559 AD, probably because they’re under the same management.

Having already enjoyed Laal Maas at Tribute a few nights earlier, we went for a staple vegetarian choice — Aloo Gobi with Naan and Stuffed Kulcha. The food was delicious, infused with regional flavours that elevate the dining experience. The menu also offers international options like Lasagna and Risotto for those seeking comforting, familiar dishes.

For dessert, we chose the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream — simple, nostalgic, and a perfect way to end the evening. However, for those seeking something traditional can go for kulfi, gajar ka halwa, gulkand rabdi and even shahi tukda.

Truth be told, for those seeking a truly delicious food experience, 1559 AD feels like the superior of the two sister restaurants.

Our Honest Take

Having dined at Tribute Restaurant just a day prior, we had high expectations for 1559 AD Udaipur — and it delivered. Unlike Upre by 1559 AD and Tribute, this one doesn’t offer a lakeside view, but that isn’t a drawback. What makes 1559 AD Udaipur one of the best restaurants in the city is its diverse menu, rich regional flavours, excellent food quality, and impeccable service.

While we didn’t try the regional favourite Laal Maas, the Aloo Gobi was exceptionally delicious, and the service was friendly and prompt. Combined with its heritage décor and Rajputana vibe, 1559 AD Udaipur provides a memorable, value-for-money dining experience.

Final Thoughts

1559 AD Udaipur is a heritage dining gem that perfectly balances old-world charm with modern comfort. From the peaceful courtyard and elegant interiors to the flavourful menu and attentive service, it delivers a dining experience that’s both relaxed and refined.

Before I dig further into the food at Cream Centre, let me take you back in time when I was an employee here. I joined Cream Centre in 1999 and it remains to be one of my most memorable work experiences so far. I also got the opportunity to learn so much about the hospitality industry. Back in those days, Cream Centre had only one branch at Chowpatty, Mumbai. However, now it has grown into a larger brand to become one of the best veg restaurants in Mumbai.

Historically, Cream Centre is almost six decades old. The business has been passed on through generations while retaining the same flavor over the years. If you are a vegetarian, or if you are in search of a pure-vegetarian food experience Cream Centre should be on your list. It is one of the best veg restaurants in Mumbai.

The Food

Cream Centre has a lengthy menu, so it won’t be possible for me to talk about every dish in there. However, I will cover the most popular ones and my recommendations.

Umm? So what should I eat today?

For starters, you can chomp some American Cheese Corn Balls. These are filled with liquid cheese sauce, coriander, spices and golden-yellow American corns. In addition, the Cream Centre Nachos are immensely popular with those who love tortilla chips dipped in the delicious yellow cheese sauce. You may also try out their onion rings that offer a sweet-salty and tangy flavor. Italian Cheese Chilli Toast is a good option as well. You may also try the Spring Vegetable Soup that comes with shredded vegetables and bite size chunks of paneer (cottage cheese).

This Indian restaurant rose to fame with its iconic and mouthwatering dish – The Original Channa Bhatura. Also popularly known as Chole Bhatura, it is actually a breakfast-time street food, which Cream Centre has transformed completely. Chana or “Chole” are white chickpeas (garbanzo beans) cooked in a spicy tangy curry. While “Bhatura” is fried bread made from wheat flour a.k.a all-purpose flour. Onions, slices of lemon and the lip-smacking carrot pickle come with the main course. This makes Cream Centre one of the best veg restaurants in Mumbai you shouldn’t miss.

Paneer Makhani is another hot favorite of mine which still retains its original flavor. The tomato gravy isn’t spicy at all. It offers a great soft malai paneer (cottage cheese) dipped in the creamy tomato gravy which is smooth as silk. If you don’t like spicy food, this is a great alternative for you. Dhingri Mutter Masaledar is a good option if you prefer vegetable gravy food.

If you prefer mix vegetables you can try their Teekha Subz Handi which literally translates as Spicy Vegetable in an Earthenware. This dish has a combination of baby potatoes, cauliflower florets, green peas, green bell peppers, onions and coriander cooked in a spiced curry. The dish is not very spicy and offers a great taste you expect from any Indian curry-based dish.

Subz Dum Biryani is a great choice for rice lovers. Aloo Paratha and Methi Aloo Paratha with dal makhani and raita are ideal if you want to skip rice options. The quality of food served here is very good. It offers a perfect price to quality balance.

The Hyderabadi Hara Masale ka Kofta is one of the best food items that you can find on the menu. It has a mildly spiced Hyderabadi Masala which is basically made from paneer (spinach gravy) and it has these delicious meatballs made from paneer (cottage cheese) and mixed vegetables that offer a perfect taste. We had it with naan and it was a perfect combination for main course meal.

To end your gastronomic journey here you can pick the popular Sizzling Brownie. It comes on a hot platter topped with a vanilla ice cream, nuts, and chocolate sauce. The cold chocolate sauce simmers over the hot platter when poured over the ice cream and the brownie. The entire area smells of rich cocoa which is an aromatic experience in itself.

The Decor

The overall décor of this Indian restaurant is very pleasing and family-oriented. The shades of white, cream and brown are evident in almost every branch. This offers a consistency to the brand, no matter wherever you go. Glass is also an important part of the ambiance making the restaurant look bigger and brighter setting the right mood.
