Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola, Tribute Restaurant feels less like a dining spot and more like a gentle nod to Udaipur’s royal past. The soft shimmer of the lake, the aroma of slow-cooked Laal Maas, and the clink of brass cutlery together create a scene that’s both intimate and grand.

Whether you’re a couple seeking a romantic lakeside dinner or a family gathering for an evening steeped in stories and flavour, Tribute in Udaipur offers an experience that blends elegance with warmth.

Named in honour of Chetak, the legendary horse of Maharana Pratap, this lakeside gem captures the soul of Rajasthan, where courage, culture, and cuisine meet over candlelight and endless conversations.

The Ambience and First Impressions

Tribute sits quietly along the edge of Lake Pichola, away from the tourist chaos that usually hums around the old city. As the evening light softens and the lamps begin to glow, the restaurant feels almost cinematic, a still frame where time slows, conversations stretch, and every sound seems to bounce off the lake.

A shot of a woman enjoying dinner experiences at Tribute Restaurant in Udaipur under candlelight.

The décor is an elegant nod to Rajputana heritage — equine motifs, warm amber lighting, and subtle regal accents that whisper stories of loyalty and valour. You can choose to sit inside the air-conditioned section or outdoors by the water.

Most evenings, the lakeside tables are the first to fill as couples, families, even solo travellers are drawn by that calm view of rippling water under the Chandpole bridge lights.

There’s romance in the air, yes, but not the exclusive kind. The place is just as inviting for a relaxed family dinner. Children watch the reflections on the water; older folks settle into long conversations over kebabs and curry. The servers move quietly, balancing warmth with professionalism, as they know when to chat and when to disappear.

The Story Behind Its Name

Before the food even arrived, something else caught my attention — the name. Tribute. It felt purposeful, not random. And then, I noticed the décor — equine art and subtle horse motifs on the walls.

The restaurant, as it turns out, is a tribute to Chetak, the legendary horse of Maharana Pratap. Every corner of this space quietly honours that legacy, a tale of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice woven into Udaipur’s history.

A picture of the painting of the Battle of Haldighati depicting Chetak's valour.
A painting of the Battle of Haldighati at City Palace, Udaipur

During the Battle of Haldighati, Chetak carried Maharana Pratap into fierce combat and, despite being gravely injured, led him to safety before collapsing.

The restaurant’s tagline — “The Horse Whose Devotion Defied Death”, isn’t just poetic marketing.

It’s a reminder of that unwavering spirit.

There’s something powerful about dining in a place built on such emotion. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a quiet salute to loyalty and bravery, values that still define Rajasthan’s soul.

Tribute doesn’t shout for attention; it earns it with its minimalistic decor. It’s the kind of restaurant that lets the setting, the food, and the stillness of the Pichola Lake do the talking.

And Oh! if you happen to spot Chetak in the painting above, tell us in the comments — we’d love to know if you found the legendary steed in the chaos.

The Food and Experience at Tribute

Our evening at Tribute unfolded slowly, the way all good dinners should. The menu arrived, a careful mix of Rajasthani classics and global dishes, but our focus was clear. We wanted a flavour that felt rooted in Udaipur.

Couple enjoying lakeside fine dining at Tribute Restaurant in Udaipur.

We began with chicken seekh kebabs, juicy, tender and smoky, followed by their famous Laal Maas — a fiery red mutton curry served with plain naans. The aroma alone announced its arrival. The spice hit deep, not sharp, and carried that slow, lingering warmth that makes you reach for another bite even when you’re full. The papads came in complimentary and added to the overall dining experience.

While our focus stayed on the signature Laal Maas, the menu also tempts with regional delights like Palak Cheese Balls, Kadhai Paneer, and Gatta Curry, each echoing Rajasthan’s bold culinary spirit. International visitors can lean toward familiar comfort with Chicken Stroganoff or explore the aromatic range of biryanis on offer.

Service here deserves its own praise. The staff moved with quiet confidence, polite, attentive, never hovering. Having worked in hospitality industry myself, I notice those little things. Tribute’s team gets it right.

Music played softly in the background, not intrusive, just enough to blend with the mild sounds of water. Between sips, bites, and shared smiles, time disappeared. That’s the magic of places like Tribute: they slow you down in the best possible way.

Final Thoughts on Tribute Udaipur

Tribute isn’t just another lakeside restaurant in Udaipur. It’s an experience that blends setting, story, and soul, where every detail feels intentional. The calm of Lake Pichola, the soft lamplight, the legacy of Chetak, and the comforting aroma of Laal Maas all come together like a quiet symphony.

Whether you’re a couple chasing a romantic dinner under the stars or a family looking to share a hearty meal by the lake, Tribute welcomes you with the same warmth. It’s elegant but not intimidating, refined yet relaxed, the kind of place that lingers in memory long after the last bite.

We hadn’t even planned to be here that evening. A spontaneous detour, thanks to Pushpendra Singh Shaktawat, led us straight to the terrace just as the lights came on. And that’s when Upre 1559 AD revealed what it’s best at — slowing time down.

Overlooking the shimmering expanse of Lake Pichola, this lake-side terrace restaurant is where Udaipur’s romance meets its skyline. As the sun sets behind the Aravalli hills, its golden light washes over the City Palace, turning its white façade into molten gold. The reflection shimmers across the lake, and for a moment, the whole city seems to glow.

Whether you’re celebrating love, chasing sunsets, or simply craving a lakeside dinner with a view, Upre by 1559 AD delivers a dining experience that feels both luxurious and intimate.

Located atop the Lake Pichola Hotel, this elegant rooftop restaurant blends heritage, comfort, and calm, where conversation flows easily, time slows down, and every seat has a postcard-worthy view.

A picture of the entrance of Upre by 1559 AD rooftop lakeside restaurant.

Finding the Rooftop: The Journey to Upre

Reaching Upre by 1559 AD is part of the charm. Hidden along a quiet lane near Ambrai Ghat, the journey takes you through Udaipur’s old-world heart, a narrow street where scooters hum past painted doorways and various small handicraft shops.

We would not recommend visiting this restaurant in your fancy vehicle, instead take the Chandpole walking bridge and take the Ambrai Road and at one point you will find Hotel Lake Pichola and Upre.

Then, you step onto the terrace, and the view opens up the panoramic views of Lake Pichola. The City Palace standing tall across the water, the hum of evening chatter fades and Gangaur Ghat comes alive with street lights all around it.

The View: When the City Palace Turns to Gold

There are rooftop restaurants, and then there’s Upre by 1559 AD, a space that feels designed for slow evenings and unhurried conversations. From its terrace perch above Lake Pichola, Upre opens to a postcard view of City Palace glowing in the sunset’s reflection, its ivory façade turning gold as the sun slips behind the Aravallis.

A picture of City Palace Udaipur with the evening golden lights on across Lake Pichola.
A shot of the City Palace Udaipur from the deck table at Upre by 1559 AD.

As twilight settles, the lights flicker across the lake, the faint sound of temple bells drifts in, and the air hums with quiet conversations and clinking glasses. The restaurant’s soft lighting, stone flooring, and breezy layout give it a timeless charm, luxurious yet intimate.

A small fountain trickles near the seating area, while a turquoise pool beside the open-air bar mirrors the last streaks of daylight.

For couples, three private cabanas offer a more secluded setup, spacious, curtained, and impossibly romantic.

Families and small groups usually prefer the deck tables that stretch along the lake’s edge, where the City Palace, Gangaur Ghat, and Jagdish Temple frame a dreamy dinner backdrop.

A picture of cabana at Upre by 1559 AD overlooking the Jagdish Temple spire.
A close-up shot of deck table at Upre by 1559 AD rooftop lakeside restaurant.

If you’re visiting for the view, arrive just before sunset. If you’re visiting for the mood, stay past it.

That’s when Udaipur transforms as the lake becomes a mirror of a thousand lights, and Upre feels less like a restaurant, more like a front-row seat to the city’s nightly theatre.

Beyond the View: What to Order (and Skip)

Like its sister restaurant 1559 AD (Bistro Lounge), Upre menu blends Rajasthani classics with continental favourites, offering a menu that’s both familiar and indulgent. You’ll find everything from Laal Maas and Mutton Dhungar to delicate soups, pastas, and grilled options, all served with the understated grace the brand is known for.

Since we’d already relished Laal Maas during our dinner experience at Tribute a few nights earlier, we opted for something different this time.

We decided to go for sweet corn chicken soup, followed by Mutton Dhungar with naan and rotis. Dhungar Maas is a variation of Laal Maas prepared with a smoky technique. The meat arrived tender, lightly smoked, and rich with earthy flavours, balanced perfectly with fresh bread.

A picture of Dhungar Maas with Naan, one of the chef's special items at Upre by 1559 AD.
A shot of vanilla ice cream with brownie dessert at Upre by 1559 AD, a good way to end the meal.

Dessert was a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, a simple, nostalgic, and a perfect way to close the evening.

While we personally found the flavours at 1559 AD slightly more refined, Upre’s strength lies in the full package, a good meal paired with a great view and genuinely warm service.

The staff moves quietly between tables, often pausing to check on guests without ever intruding. So, we had no issues with the service.

Vegetarians will find plenty to choose from here, and those seeking a fine-dine experience without the stiffness of luxury hotels will appreciate Upre’s relaxed yet polished approach.

Insider Details: Reservations & Best Tables

The best time to visit Upre by 1559 AD is just before sunset. As the golden light washes over City Palace and the reflections ripple across Lake Pichola, the view turns cinematic — it’s that perfect “pause and stare” moment Udaipur is famous for.

A shot of deck tables at Upre by 1559 AD overlooking Lake Pichola and the City Palace just before the golden hour.
A shot of Gangaur Ghat from Upre by 1559 AD during the evening hours as lights shimmer in Lake Pichola.

That said, book your table in advance, especially if you’re visiting between October and February. Sunset slots fill up quickly, and walk-ins often end up waiting or missing the best lake-facing seats.

If you’re arriving by car or Uber, note that the approach road near Chand Pole Bridge can be confusing and narrow. Most drivers will drop you close to Ambrai Ghat, from where a short walk leads to Lake Pichola Hotel, home to Upre’s rooftop terrace.

💡 Pro Tip: Ask for a table on the upper deck — it has only a handful of tables but offers the most spectacular views of the lake and palace.

💰 Average Cost:₹1,500–₹2,000 for two (without alcohol)
📍 Location:Lake Pichola Hotel, Near Chand Pole, Udaipur
⏰ Best Time:5:30 PM – 7:30 PM for sunset dining
⏰ Open From7:30 to 10:30 / 12:30 to 15:00 / 19:00 to 23:00

The Verdict: Does the Experience Match the Hype?

Having dined at both Tribute Restaurant and 1559 AD Bistro Lounge, Upre naturally had high expectations to meet. In terms of ambience and view, it wins hands down, very few other restaurants in Udaipur offers this postcard-perfect panorama of Lake Pichola and the City Palace glowing in the sunset.

But when it comes to flavour and finesse, 1559 AD and Tribute both deliver highly on flavour and impeccable service. Upre, on the other hand, feels more about the experience than the plate — ideal for those seeking romance and atmosphere, less so for purist food enthusiasts.

Final Reflections: A Sunset Worth Remembering

In the end, Upre is where you go to watch Udaipur turn gold at sunset, not necessarily to chase the city’s finest flavours. It’s a restaurant built for romance and reflection, less about what’s on the plate and more about what you see when you look up.

If you’d like to stay right where Upre is located, we’ve also featured Lake Pichola Hotel in our curated list of Best Hotels Near City Palace, Udaipur, a beautiful heritage stay that shares the same lakeside magic as this restaurant.

FAQs About Iftar in Mumbai During Ramadan

If I only have one evening in Mumbai during Ramadan, which area should I go to for the full experience?

Stick to Mohammed Ali Road and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road. Within a few lanes, you can explore places like Haji Tikka, Shabbir Tawakkal, J.J. Jalebi, Cafe Paradise, and even iconic restaurants such as Noor Mohammadi Hotel and Shalimar Restaurant. It’s the easiest way to experience maximum variety without walking too much.

Is Mohammed Ali Road worth the crowd, or are there better, less chaotic options?

Yes, it’s absolutely worth experiencing at least once during Ramadan. But if you prefer a calmer setting, try Queen Mary Restaurant in Mazgaon, Cafe Nizari, or New Grand Restaurant near Novelty Cinema for a more relaxed meal.

What time should I realistically reach for Iftar to avoid the rush?

The earlier, the better. Aim for around 7 pm. The crowd builds up rapidly after Maghrib, and the later you arrive, the harder it becomes to find seating.

Are these places family-friendly?

Yes, several are ideal for families. Noor Mohammadi Hotel, Shalimar Restaurant, Queen Mary Restaurant, New Grand Restaurant (Family AC section), Jaffer Bhai’s Delhi Darbar, and Persia Darbar offer comfortable dine-in settings.

Do any of these spots require reservations during Ramadan?

Most of the popular spots operate on a first-come, first-served basis during Ramadan, and reservations are generally not required.

Are there good vegetarian options available?

Ramadan menus are heavily non-vegetarian focused, but several restaurants such as Noor Mohammadi Hotel, Shalimar Restaurant, Queen Mary Restaurant, and New Grand Restaurant do offer vegetarian dishes.

Is parking difficult in these areas?

Yes. Streets around Mohammed Ali Road and nearby areas get extremely crowded during Ramadan evenings, and parking can be challenging. Public transport or ride-hailing services are often more convenient.

Are these places open only till Iftar time?

No. Most establishments remain open late into the night, and many are busiest well after Iftar.

Where should I go for iconic malpua, phirni, and falooda?

For malpua and phirni, Noorani Milk Centre is a standout. Shabbir Tawakkal and J.J. Jalebi are strong contenders too. For falooda, head to Baba Falooda or Badshah Falooda in Crawford Market. Stepping into 1559 AD, Udaipur, you’re instantly transported to a world where heritage charm meets relaxed dining. Nestled within a tranquil courtyard, the restaurant combines colonial-era elegance with Rajasthani warmth, creating a space where conversation flows freely and every corner tells a story.

Whether you’re seeking an intimate dinner, exploring Udaipur’s culinary scene, or simply soaking in a serene heritage setting, 1559 AD offers a dining experience that’s both refined and inviting.

With its tastefully restored interiors, open courtyard, and soft lighting, 1559 AD strikes the perfect balance between old-world grandeur and modern comfort, making every meal feel special.

We thank Pushpendra Singh Shaktawat for introducing us to this restaurant. Our review, however, is fair and based entirely on our own experience.

Getting to 1559 AD

Finding 1559 AD is part of the experience and surprisingly easy. This restaurant, bistro lounge sits right on Fateh Sagar Road, so you won’t need to do much searching.

The restaurant is best accessed by car or cab, making it convenient even if you’re not familiar with Udaipur’s roads. As soon as you enter through the main entry, you’re greeted by the peaceful ambience of the open courtyard and tastefully restored interiors.

A picture of elephant statues welcoming the guests at the entrance of 1559 AD Udaipur restaurant.

Heritage walls, soft lighting, and shaded seating create a space that feels a world away from the bustling streets outside. Unlike its sister restaurant, Upre by 1559 AD, this one doesn’t offer panoramic lake views. Instead, the focus is on heritage-style dining.

The Ambience and Décor

As you walk through the courtyard, you encounter a heritage bungalow transformed into a highly rated restaurant. The century-old property retains most of its architectural design and is fused with the concept of art nouvelle.

Outdoors, tables are evenly spaced for those who want to enjoy garden dining. We, however, chose to move indoors for our meal. Along the way, we noticed some tables in the corridor area as well.

The lounge area is equally inviting. You could easily spend more time here than at a Starbucks if you want to linger over food and conversation. In the evenings, live music adds a charming backdrop to the experience.

The main dining area boasts simple yet elegant decor, warm and welcoming. It exudes old-world hospitality while delivering classy service and a refined dining experience. This makes 1559 AD a great choice for couples and families seeking quality meal time together.

Food and Menu Experience

Between the two sister restaurants, we chose to try 1559 AD Udaipur first. Like Upre, it blends Rajasthani classics with continental favourites, making the menu both approachable and indulgent.

The variety allows you to explore a range of vegetarian and meat dishes, all served with the style and grace the restaurant is known for. The menu is quite identical to Upre by 1559 AD, probably because they’re under the same management.

Having already enjoyed Laal Maas at Tribute a few nights earlier, we went for a staple vegetarian choice — Aloo Gobi with Naan and Stuffed Kulcha. The food was delicious, infused with regional flavours that elevate the dining experience. The menu also offers international options like Lasagna and Risotto for those seeking comforting, familiar dishes.

For dessert, we chose the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream — simple, nostalgic, and a perfect way to end the evening. However, for those seeking something traditional can go for kulfi, gajar ka halwa, gulkand rabdi and even shahi tukda.

Truth be told, for those seeking a truly delicious food experience, 1559 AD feels like the superior of the two sister restaurants.

Our Honest Take

An image of couple having dinner at 1559 AD restaurant in Udaipur.

Having dined at Tribute Restaurant just a day prior, we had high expectations for 1559 AD Udaipur — and it delivered. Unlike Upre by 1559 AD and Tribute, this one doesn’t offer a lakeside view, but that isn’t a drawback. What makes 1559 AD Udaipur one of the best restaurants in the city is its diverse menu, rich regional flavours, excellent food quality, and impeccable service.

While we didn’t try the regional favourite Laal Maas, the Aloo Gobi was exceptionally delicious, and the service was friendly and prompt. Combined with its heritage décor and Rajputana vibe, 1559 AD Udaipur provides a memorable, value-for-money dining experience.

Final Thoughts

A shot of hanging lights around the courtyard leading to 1559 AD Udaipur restaurant.

1559 AD Udaipur is a heritage dining gem that perfectly balances old-world charm with modern comfort. From the peaceful courtyard and elegant interiors to the flavourful menu and attentive service, it delivers a dining experience that’s both relaxed and refined.

While it doesn’t boast lakeside views like its sister restaurant Upre, 1559 AD stands out for its heritage ambience, diverse menu, and quality of food, making it a great choice for couples, families, or anyone looking to enjoy a memorable meal in Udaipur.

I am certainly not a foodie, I guess you can tell from my slim body size, but I love exploring new food and places where I can find delicious food. Somehow new veg restaurants in Mumbai offer something new that attract me. Furthermore, I love to experience their own take on how they present food and the kind of flavors they infuse in it. For me, the visit to the veg restaurants in Mumbai is not only about the food, but about the experience, so there are a few Indian restaurants that make it up to my favorite list, Cream Centre is one such veg  restaurants in Mumbai that never disappoints me.

Before I dig further into the food at Cream Centre, let me take you back in time when I was an employee here. I joined Cream Centre in 1999 and it remains to be one of my most memorable work experiences so far. I also got the opportunity to learn so much about the hospitality industry. Back in those days, Cream Centre had only one branch at Chowpatty, Mumbai. However, now it has grown into a larger brand to become one of the best veg restaurants in Mumbai.

Historically, Cream Centre is almost six decades old. The business has been passed on through generations while retaining the same flavor over the years. If you are a vegetarian, or if you are in search of a pure-vegetarian food experience Cream Centre should be on your list. It is one of the best veg restaurants in Mumbai.

The Food

Cream Centre has a lengthy menu, so it won’t be possible for me to talk about every dish in there. However, I will cover the most popular ones and my recommendations.

Cream Centre

Umm? So what should I eat today?

For starters, you can chomp some American Cheese Corn Balls. These are filled with liquid cheese sauce, coriander, spices and golden-yellow American corns. In addition, the Cream Centre Nachos are immensely popular with those who love tortilla chips dipped in the delicious yellow cheese sauce. You may also try out their onion rings that offer a sweet-salty and tangy flavor. Italian Cheese Chilli Toast is a good option as well. You may also try the Spring Vegetable Soup that comes with shredded vegetables and bite size chunks of paneer (cottage cheese).

This Indian restaurant rose to fame with its iconic and mouthwatering dish – The Original Channa Bhatura. Also popularly known as Chole Bhatura, it is actually a breakfast-time street food, which Cream Centre has transformed completely. Chana or “Chole” are white chickpeas (garbanzo beans) cooked in a spicy tangy curry. While “Bhatura” is fried bread made from wheat flour a.k.a all-purpose flour. Onions, slices of lemon and the lip-smacking carrot pickle come with the main course. This makes Cream Centre one of the best veg restaurants in Mumbai you shouldn’t miss.

Paneer Makhani is another hot favorite of mine which still retains its original flavor. The tomato gravy isn’t spicy at all. It offers a great soft malai paneer (cottage cheese) dipped in the creamy tomato gravy which is smooth as silk. If you don’t like spicy food, this is a great alternative for you. Dhingri Mutter Masaledar is a good option if you prefer vegetable gravy food.

If you prefer mix vegetables you can try their Teekha Subz Handi which literally translates as Spicy Vegetable in an Earthenware. This dish has a combination of baby potatoes, cauliflower florets, green peas, green bell peppers, onions and coriander cooked in a spiced curry. The dish is not very spicy and offers a great taste you expect from any Indian curry-based dish.

The Hyderabadi Hara Masale ka Kofta is one of the best food items that you can find on the menu. It has a mildly spiced Hyderabadi Masala which is basically made from paneer (spinach gravy) and it has these delicious meatballs made from paneer (cottage cheese) and mixed vegetables that offer a perfect taste. We had it with naan and it was a perfect combination for main course meal.

To end your gastronomic journey here you can pick the popular Sizzling Brownie. It comes on a hot platter topped with a vanilla ice cream, nuts, and chocolate sauce. The post Best Street Food in Mumbai: Your Options appeared first on Travel India Destinations.

No matter where you are in the world you will find that street food is a part of the local culture. Even some of the top megacities in the world are popular for the street food they offer. Street food in Mumbai is a part of the local culture and therefore you will find plenty of options here.

Known as the financial hub of the country, Mumbai has always been a place for street food lovers. Here you will find tons of places where people gobble up food as they manage their hectic routine. The good part about finding street food in Mumbai is that you don’t have to try hard. There are plenty of stalls and street food vendors that would provide you with a variety of food items.

Here are few options if you are looking for street food in Mumbai to manage your hunger and budget.

Vada Pav

A conversation about street food in Mumbai is incomplete without mentioning the ever-popular vada pav. While there are many burger and sandwich brands in the city vada pav still remains the top street food in Mumbai. It would be almost impossible to count the number of vada pav vendors you will find across the city.

Vada pav is a potato fritter stashed between the pav (bread) served with a spread of chutneys and chillis. These potato fritters are an ideal food option on a rainy day in Mumbai. There are many street vendors and vada pav stalls that you will find across the city. However, some stalls are popular than others because they have been there for quite some time.

Having a vada pav is a great way to manage your budget and survive in this city without spending more. The good thing about finding a vada pav stall is that you don’t have to find one. You can just stroll down your street and you will find one for sure.

Bun Maska and Irani Tea

A typical Irani chai and bun maska might not sound like a street food in Mumbai, but it definitely fits the same budget. If you are in Grant Road you will find the B Merwan and Company Irani cafe right opposite the railway station.

There are plenty of Irani cafes that you will find across the city. Irani cafes like Kyani and Company can provide you with these simple bun maska and Irani chai options that can help you satisfy your hunger in the best way. Most of the Irani cafes offer you a short break experience. So, if you are looking for a quick bite or a short meeting this is the right place to be at.

Pav Bhaji

It would sound unbelievable if you found that the local street food in Mumbai has an American connection. Yes, the pav bhaji does have some indirect link to the American Civil War. How?

Well, from 1861 to 1865, the American Civil War situation influenced the global supply of cotton. Abraham Lincoln’s Navy decided to seal New Orleans, Mississippi and Manchester looms. This created a shortage of cotton in the global cotton market.

Traders at the Bombay Cotton Exchange stepped in to fill in the void. However, they had to stay at work late night to receive rates via telegram from America. The demand for food at such odd hours was a challenge for wives of these traders.

This led to the creation of pav bhaji. A simple idea that became timeless. The idea was to throw in all the leftovers and vegetables in a tomato gravy and mash it together. In other words, pav bhaji is a stew mash up served with buttered loaves. The loaf would soak up the gravy and the oil and would be easy to eat.

Today, pav bhaji has become a street food in Mumbai and you will find plenty of stalls and restaurants dedicated to it. Also, pav bhaji is available in a variety of choices because one can practically throw in any ingredient to it.

Misal Pav

If you are in Mumbai you must definitely try Misal Pav a.k.a. Misal. The literal meaning of Misal is ‘Mixture’. Misal Pav is a breakfast or a midday snack. It is quite affordable and nutritious which makes it one of the popular street food in Mumbai.

The core of the dish consists of the gravy that will have a mix of moth bean (matki) or chana (chickpea). Sev (crunchy noodles) is added to this gravy. Furthermore, a mixture of chopped onions, coriander and other regional ingredients are added. The gravy is served with a slice of bread or small loaves.

There are plenty of street vendors and stalls and even restaurants that serve different variants of misal pav. However, Kolhapuri and Puneri misal are the two most popular versions. The Kolhapuri misal has more spiciness to it.

Dosa and Idli

If you are not much into fried and spicy food you can definitely focus on these two street food items. Over the years, dosa has remained one of my favourite street food in Mumbai. Personally, I prefer food with less oil and that’s why both idlis and dosas are high on my street food list.

Dosa is a rice pancake while idli is a savory rice cake. Both these food items are historically connected to the state of Karnataka. Although, as per some ancient literature dosa was used in Tamil culture as well.

However, in popular tradition, the town of Udipi is the birthplace of dosa. On the other hand, there are various sources that have different stories about the origin of idlis. Some food historians believe Indonesia is the birth place of the modern day steam idli. Eventually, the recipe came to India.
