The best part about visiting Jagdish Mandir Udaipur is that it is centrally located. This means that you can walk to the temple if you are staying in any of the hotels near Jagdish Temple Udaipur. The temple is located at Jagdish Chowk (square) from where roads lead in different directions.

If you prefer to use public transport you can hire a rickshaw or book an Uber. However, I’m not quite sure if they drop you right at Jagdish Chowk because of the narrow lane.

Driving your private car to the temple is not something we would recommend. This is because the roads are quite narrow with practically no parking space. If you are planning to visit the temple in your car, we would recommend that you park your car elsewhere and walk the rest of the narrow lane. This will help you save a lot of time and effort.

History and Significance of Jagdish Temple Udaipur

Jagdish Temple Udaipur was built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh, ruler of Udaipur from 1628 to 1653. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu triad that includes Brahma (the creator) and Shiva (the destroyer). One of the reasons to visit Jagdish Temple Udaipur is that it still is the largest temple in Udaipur.

The three-storied temple stands on a raised terrace, giving it an imposing presence. As you approach, you’ll notice 32 white marble steps leading you up to the temple entrance. The temple spire (shikhar) rises 79 feet high dominating the Udaipur skyline.

The temple was initially named Jagannath Rai but was later renamed Jagdish Temple. As per Wikipedia, the temple cost is estimated around Indian Rupees 1.5 million (equivalent to $22023) in the year 1651.

Apart from being a cultural landmark, Jagdish Temple also has a lot of historical significance. The temple has stood the test of time and witnessed invasions by the Mughals. During this time, the Mughals have damaged some of the temple carvings and artwork. However, many of the intricate carvings are intact to this day.

The architecture of Jagdish Temple Udaipur is a stunning example of Indo-Aryan style. The temple features intricately carved pillars, painted ceilings, and beautifully detailed walls, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. It consists of three levels: a sanctum, a hall, and a porch, all supported by pillars with delicate carvings.

The outer walls of the temple are adorned with sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, including various deities, goddesses, and animal motifs. The craftsmanship here reflects the devotion and artistic excellence of the period. As you climb the stairs, two elephant massive elephant statues welcome you on either side.

Inside the temple, the sanctum houses the main idol of Lord Vishnu, while smaller shrines dedicated to other deities like Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha can be found throughout. The granite floors and elaborate stone carvings add to the grandeur of the temple’s architecture, making it a true marvel to behold.

The moment you climb the stairs and step inside the temple courtyard area you will see a separate shrine of The Garuda. This structure has the brass idol of The Garuda.

The Garuda is Lord Vishnu’s vehicle (half man – half eagle). He has the wings to reach anywhere swiftly and eyes to keep constant watch to keep evil at bay. The location of the Garuda’s shrine right at the entrance symbolizes guarding the doorway of the temple.

As you explore the courtyard of the temple you will see beautifully hand-carved pillars, painted walls, gargoyles and a lot more. Additionally, you will also see four smaller shrines in each corner. These shrines are dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Surya, Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva.

While most people would prefer to visit Udaipur Palace on the first day itself, we had more than a week to explore. Hence, we decided to cover City Palace Udaipur during the later part of our Udaipur itinerary.

Brief History of City Palace Udaipur

Historically, the Mewar dynasty, which includes the Sisodia and Choudhary families, ruled Chittor, a historic city located just north of Udaipur. For over 800 years, Chittor served as the capital city of the Mewar kingdom.

However, by 1537, when Maharana Udai Singh II inherited the throne, he faced a challenging situation. The Mughal Empire was rapidly expanding its influence with a formidable army, seizing control of forts and winning critical battles.

According to legend, during one of his hunting expeditions, Maharana Udai Singh II encountered a hermit who advised him to establish his capital at a safer, strategically located site. The suggested area was naturally fortified by dense forests, scenic lakes, and the protective Aravalli Hills.

Taking this advice, Maharana Udai Singh II chose to relocate his kingdom’s capital, founding the city of Udaipur. This location provided a stronger defensive position and became the ideal setting for the City Palace Udaipur, the iconic palace complex that continues to captivate visitors today.

It seems like City Palace Udaipur might be built on flat land beside Lake Pichola, but in fact, it stands atop a hill. Constructed in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia Rajput family, the palace overlooks the lake, offering breathtaking views while providing a strategic defensive advantage.

People often refer to this palace as the “beating heart of Udaipur” because of its distinctive, evolving history. Unlike other historic monuments, City Palace Udaipur has transformed continuously over the centuries, spanning an impressive 400-year history.

The palace is not the legacy of a single ruler; instead, various rulers of the Mewar dynasty contributed to its construction and expansion, resulting in an architectural marvel unlike any other.

This grand complex is a fusion of 11 magnificent palaces, each designed under the guidance of 42 different rulers over four centuries. Remarkably, despite contributions from multiple generations—22 generations of the Sisodia Rajput family have lived here—the palace maintains a harmonious design.

Entirely constructed with granite and marble, the interiors of City Palace Udaipur feature elaborate balconies, towers, and intricate glasswork, mirrorwork, and wall paintings. The palace’s layout is designed with narrow passages, zigzag corridors, and interconnected quadrangles.

These architectural features served a strategic purpose: they were intended to confuse enemies in the event of a surprise attack. Additionally, since Mughal soldiers were often larger in stature, these narrow passages restricted their movement, making it difficult for them to navigate through the palace in groups.

Built by Rana Sangram Singh II between 1710 and 1734, it hosted music and dance performances. This area provides panoramic views of Udaipur and Lake Pichola.

Key attractions include blue Chinese tiles, vibrant coloured glass, and detailed murals. Apart from Amar Vilas Garden, this is one of the best places to take photos in the Udaipur Palace.

6. Mor Chowk

One of the main attractions of City Palace Udaipur is Mor Chowk (The Peacock Courtyard). This courtyard is filled with exquisite glass inlay work which immediately holds your attention. The space was initially constructed by Rana Karan Singh. However, the glass inlay work was later added by Maharana Sajjan Singh. This space was used for special audiences and dinner events.

7. Kanch Ki Burj

Also known as The Mirror Tower, Kanch ki Burj is the most ornate chamber in the City Palace Udaipur. Glass inlay work, a speciality of Rajasthan, adorns this room, once the Maharanas’ winter bedroom. It features a zig-zag pattern in red, yellow, and white—the colours of Mewar. Mirrors decorate the dome and floor, while the doors are crafted from ivory.

8. Moti Mahal

Maharana Karan Singh constructed Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) and used it as his private residence. However, almost two centuries later Maharana Jawan Singh added ornamentation to make it even better. The mirrored walls and stained glass windows reflect light in many different ways throughout the day.

9. Manak Mahal

As you explore through various chambers of the Mardana Mahal (Men’s Chamber) you come across Manak Mahal. As the name suggests, the Manak Mahal (Ruby Palace) chamber is adorned with rubies and glass inlay work and was used for a formal audience. Here you will find the religious insignia of the Sisodia dynasty.

10. Surya Chopar

On the lower level of Udaipur Palace is Surya Chopar (Sun Square) that has the largest sun-face emblem made of pure gold. It was customary for the Maharanas to pray to the Sun before breakfast every morning.

However, during the monsoon season, this was not possible due to weather conditions. Hence, a large mirror was placed in a certain way that would reflect sunlight on this large sun-face emblem. The kings would offer prayer to the Sun before they have their first meal of the day.

11. Zenana Mahal

When you are done exploring the Mardana Mahal (Men’s Chamber) you would come to the Zenana Mahal which is where the royal ladies would spend their days. Zenana Mahal (Women’s Chamber) was where the royal ladies would celebrate their events, rituals and discuss matters related to women.

12. Zenana Mahal Courtyard

One of the best spots for photography in City Palace Udaipur is the Zenana Mahal courtyard. This is a wide courtyard with ample space to take portrait pictures and even those who are into professional couple pictures. With trees and fountains you can have a great time taking images of yourself, partner and family.

13. City Palace Galleries

A part of Zenana Mahal has now been transformed into a museum where you can explore different collections that you can explore. Here you can find the sculpture collection that has sculpture collection dating back to 7^th century. All the sculptures in the collection were once part of popular temples of Rajasthan and surrounding regions.

Similarly, you will also find antique musical instruments on display in the ‘Saraswati Vilas Gallery: Symphony of Mewar’ music gallery. These musical instruments belong to the royal family and you can take your time to browse through them.

The Silver Gallery is one of the most stunning galleries in City Palace Udaipur displaying all the items of various generations of the Mewar family. One of the highlights of the Silver Gallery is the buggy or horse-carriage from Bikaner. This horse-carriage was used during the wedding of Maharaj Kumar Bhagwat Singh with Princess Sushila Kumari of Bikaner in 1940.

14. Toran Pol

Located on the north side of the Zenana Mahal (Women’s Chamber), Toran Pol (The Crown Gate) is a gate that has a lot of cultural importance. In a traditional wedding ritual, the bridegroom touches a temporary crown attached to the top of the gate to enter the Zenana Mahal courtyard. Rana Karan Singh constructed the gate between 1620 and 1628. However, people have used it for wedding rituals since the 19th century and continue to do so today.

Since you are going to walk for an hour or more having great footwear can make a difference. Hence, make sure you wear your best walking shoes.

Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle to stay hydrated during the tour.

Allocate Enough Time: Plan at least 3 hours for the visit, including time for photos and enjoying the artwork.

Nestled on the outskirts of Udaipur, Sajjan Garh Biological Animal Park is closer to Fateh Sagar Lake offering amazing landscape views. The park is located right at the foothills of the iconic Sajjangarh Palace. It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and conservation efforts. This makes it a prime destination for eco-tourism in Udaipur.

On our visit to Udaipur, we decided to visit City Palace Udaipur towards the end of the tour and instead start with this zoological park. Udaipur is also a great place for honeymoon. Hence, if you are planning your honeymoon you must get some real-life tips. It allows you to explore the nature and the scenic view of this place especially during the morning hours.

Brief History of Sajjan Garh Biological Park Udaipur

Established in 2015, as part of the Maharana of Mewar’s efforts to conserve wildlife Sajjangarh Biological Park came into existence. The park was named after Maharana Sajjan Singh and the facility is set in the lush foothills of the Aravalli Range creating a natural habitat for its diverse species.

The park is located 4 kilometres from the city centre. However, Uber can drop you here in less than 15 minutes. It covers an area of 36 hectares (90 acres) offering a variety of animals, birds and reptiles. The purpose of the park is to offer protection to essential and endangered species in India and the world.

Made at the cost of 217 million INR (2.6 million USD) the project is a unique collaboration between various state departments. The Rajasthan State Road Development and Construction Corporation Ltd came together to manage civil construction works. The Public Works Department contributed to developing the service roads while the Forest Department managed forestry works.

If you are looking for the best wildlife experience at Sajjangarh Biological Park Udaipur we would recommend you visit this place early morning. We chose to visit the park on a weekday because the park receives many tourists on the weekend.

When you arrive here you see this massive entry gate which is also an entry gate to the Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace. The left-side entry is for the park and the right-side entry is for the palace on the top of the mountain.

So, if you are a first-timer like us and if you want to visit Sajjangarh Biological Park first you need to get down at this gate. The ticket counter is on the right side of the gate.  After buying the tickets for the park you can enter through the left gate.

This animal park is huge and therefore we chose to take a picture of the map on our smartphone. This would allow us to refer to it as we move around. The tiled path throughout the park made it convenient to walk around.

Once inside the park, we had a great time spotting birds and squirrels that were curious to spot us with a camera and a monopod. We tried our best not to disturb them and capture images from far away.

There are ample benches around the park where we sit to catch our breath. We skipped our lunch because there were not many good restaurants around the park gate. After our trip through the park, we decided to head up to the Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace in the late afternoon hours.

• Visit the park in the early morning hours. By afternoon hours, most of the animals are resting and will stay away from the fence.
• Before you buy the park tickets you must decide to rent a golf cart or cover the entire tour on foot. If you have limited time or have elderly/kids along it is ideal to rent a golf cart to cover the hilly terrain.
• The park tour on foot can take around 3-4 hours if you want to experience its beauty. So, plan your itinerary accordingly.
• Have a good breakfast before you leave your home or hotel, especially if you are going to walk in the park. The park has a hilly terrain. Hence, not all paths are completely flat.
• Always wear a cap or hat on a sunny day. Wear full-sleeve clothes to avoid sunburn.
• Carry water bottles to hydrate and replenish your body. Also, you can carry protein bars and other snack items to ensure you are not hungry. The park has clean toilets so you are covered.
• If you plan to walk a good pair of footwear would allow you comfort and convenience.
• Don’t litter in the park and don’t feed the animals.
• Avoid talking loudly as that will drive away the animals further inside the enclosure making it hard for you to spot them.
• The park is closed on Tuesdays. It receives plenty of visitors on weekends, so plan it at your convenience.
• Take a picture of the park map on your mobile device because that way you can always refer to it as you walk. It can help you find the toilet area when required.

Built in the 18^th century (1710 – 1734), Saheliyon ki Bari (Garden of the Maidens) was designed by Maharana Sangram Singh II. As per various legends, this was a gift to the queen by the king himself.

While I have no credible proof of this, it is said that when the queen got married to Maharana Sangram Singh II she was accompanied by 48 maids in her marriage. However, there was no space for the queen and her maids to go out in the open without being spotted by other males in the vicinity.

To provide the queen and her maids with moments of pleasure of being out in the open the king decided to build this garden. Decorated with ornate marble pavilions, intricately carved fountains and a massive blooming lotus pond, Saheliyon ki Bari was a lush garden designed as a retreat offering private sanctuary away from the grandeur of court life.

Later, Maharana Bhopal Singh added a pavilion with rain fountains that mimic the sound of cascading rain and various sounds related to water. This is what makes Saheliyon ki Bari one of the unique places to visit in Udaipur.

Note: Areas around the rain fountains can be wet. Hence, I recommend wearing a slip-resistant footwear. Right before we toured the garden, it drizzled for a while. Hence, all floors in the images are wet.

The main pool is called ‘Sawan Bhado’ (Rainy Season) and this pool mimics the sound of a pouring rain. This is the biggest pool/fountain in the garden. It has four marble pavilions at the corners with bird figurines atop. No matter where you stand around this pool you can shut your eyes and the sound of the fountain will bring you the images of a pouring rain.

Similarly, various smaller fountains mimic different versions of rain-related sounds like drizzling, pattering and misting sounds.

There are more than 250 cenotaphs present here including one of Maharana Amar Singh. These memorials reflect the grandeur of Rajasthani architecture and the best part is that there are not many tourists around.

When you are in Udaipur you should explore an authentic Rajasthani haveli (mansion) reflecting the traditional Rajasthani architecture. This is one of the best ways to explore Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage. Nestled on the waterfront of Lake Pichola, this haveli has over 100 rooms highlighting the opulent lifestyle of Udaipur’s aristocracy.

You can walk through the grand courtyards, and balconies and explore the detailed architecture, weaponry and folk art. Ideally, you must visit this place before evening hours as it closes down and reopens for evening cultural performances and dance and light shows.

12. Take a Bicycle Tour of the City

This is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and still enjoy some lovely sights of the city and other areas like Badi Lake. I would recommend opting for a bicycle tour early morning when there’s less traffic.

One of the best things to do in Udaipur is enjoy meals at restaurants overlooking a lake. This offers a unique experience that is hard to find elsewhere. You can find various amazing restaurants around Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake.

My recommendations would be to try The Tribute, Ambrai Restaurant and 1559 AD. Please note that you might confused 1559 AD and Upre by 1559 AD as the same restaurant but they are not. However, they have the same management team.

Personally, we felt that the food at 1559 AD had an edge over Upre by 1559 AD. However, Upre enjoys a stunning lake view. Hence, if location doesn’t matter to you I would recommend 1559 AD near Fateh Sagar Road.

16. Visit the Maharana Pratap Memorial

While you are exploring Udaipur you can also visit the Maharana Pratap Memorial at Moti Magri Hill in Udaipur. This is one of the best places where you can enjoy a serene environment. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and overlooking the spectacular Fateh Sagar Lake you can enjoy your time here.

Here you can find a memorial that features a bronze statue of Maharana Pratap riding his loyal horse, Chetak. The site also houses a museum exhibiting weapons, artefacts and detailed accounts of Maharana Pratap’s battles and personal life.

During late evening hours, the vibe of the place is quite different which adds to the experience. While Udaipur sits last on this list it certainly is my and Sarah’s most loved destination in India. And it is not only us who are going bonkers about it. Udaipur has consistently ranked as the second-best city in the world and won Travel + Leisure Awards.

During our visit in 2018, we had a great time in Udaipur. I wrote an entire Udaipur series that covered various lakeside restaurants, temples, markets, royal palaces and local attractions.

Often referred to as the City of Lakes, Udaipur is also among the top honeymoon destinations in India. Nestled around the Aravalli Hills, Udaipur has two lakes where you can enjoy your time. Lake Pichola is the main attraction here with spectacular views of Lake Palace, Monsoon Palace and City Palace.

However, Fateh Sagar Lake is equally mesmerizing and can provide you with spectacular evening moments. During the monsoon season, you can enjoy the lush green landscape that Udaipur Rajasthan has to offer.

Obviously, when you are visiting City Palace in Udaipur you should give it a whole day. This is because the palace is so vast it will take you hours before you finish the tour. The overall architecture and design are massive and complex with so many small doors, windows and alleys that you have to navigate.

We decided to hire a registered tour guide Mr. Natwar who took us along through various palace doors and entrances. However, this Thursday Doors post focuses on a singular experience we had as Mr. Natwar took us through the City Palace tour.

So, as we were exploring the architecture of the palace we came across many small doors and windows. However, when we reached this particular door, Mr Natwar decided to take me for a ride (in a good way).

He promptly asked me to open the door and look at what was inside. Now, I’m not a muscular person but I went ahead to open the door. At this moment, Sarah was clicking my pictures while Mr Natwar I believe must be enjoying the show.

I tried with all my might, but the door was jammed. To make it worse, I had the camera bag on my left shoulder and the monopod bag on my right which was inconvenient. Eventually, I decided to put that down and give it another try.

After 3 to 5 minutes of several failed attempts, I gave up. The door was jammed horribly.

It was then, that Mr. Natwar came forward and said, ‘It’s just a wall. There is no door’.

I was like ‘WHAT?’

He was like, ‘Yeah, this wall was designed by the king to make it appear like a door. He would then make fun of his guests and relatives who would try all their strength to open the door but fail miserably. This door is for entertainment purposes.’

By this time, many other tourists gathered around us probably assuming that I would open this door and reveal something interesting. Instead, I just made a fool of myself in front of all. I went through a lot of mixed emotions then. However, it was a funny incident we still cherish and now decided to share.

We also later found out that the palace has many such doors that never open.

To this date, the wall/door has been maintained to entertain the visitors. It is likely if you do not hire tour guides you would pass by this door assuming it is just a plain door.
